Riding Upon the Horse of True Mathematics: Tullio Levi-Civita and his Impact on Einstein's Theory of General Relativity

Abstract:
We shall review the important and manifold contributions of Tullio Levi-Civita to both the mathematics and the physics of Einstein's theory of General Relativity (GR). Beyond the foundational 1900 paper of Ricci and Levi-Civita on "Méthodes de Calcul différentiel absolu", Levi-Civita made important contributions to, notably: static gravitational fields in GR, the variational principles in GR, the definition of the gravitational energy, the existence of gravitational waves, the introduction of the concept of connection, the problem of motion of N-bodies,... He had a long and detailed correspondence with Einstein who admired the clarity of his mind and the fact that his mathematical viewpoint allowed him to see immediately things that a physicist (like Einstein) had difficulty apprehending. Indeed, in 1917, Einstein wrote to Levi-Civita that: " I admire the elegance of your method of calculation. It must be nice to ride through these fields upon the horse of true mathematics, while the likes of us have to make our way laboriously on foot."

La geometria dello spazio-tempo da Galileo e Newton a Levi-Civita e Einstein

Abstract:
L'idea che il movimento dei corpi celesti sia determinato dalla geometria 
dello spazio è piuttosto antica e risale almeno all'affermazione di Aristotele secondo cui 
i corpi 
orbitano lungo circonferenze, rappresentando quest’ultime le curve con il più alto grado di perfezione. La cosmologia aristotelica non resse al vaglio di Galileo e di altri fondatori del 
metodo scientifico. Tuttavia l’intuizione che i movimenti naturali fossero determinati dalla geometria dello spazio --- o,
più tardi, dello
 spazio-tempo --- sopravvisse e riapparve nella teoria della Relatività Generale di Einstein. Nella conferenza si illustrerà come, mediante il linguaggio della matematica, un'
idea meramente qualitativa fu precisata ed incorporata in una potente teoria fisica. Una speciale 
enfasi sarà posta 
sul ruolo cruciale che in ciò ebbe l'opera di Tullio Levi-Civita.

Einstein’s Italian Mathematicians: Ricci, Levi-Civita, and the Birth of General Relativity

Abstract:
In the first decade of the twentieth century as Albert Einstein began formulating a revolutionary theory of gravity, the Italian mathematician Gregorio Ricci was entering the later stages of what appeared to be a productive if not particularly memorable career, devoted largely to what his colleagues regarded as the dogged development of a mathematical language he called the absolute differential calculus. In 1912, the work of these two dedicated scientists would intersect—and physics and mathematics would never be the same. My talk will tell the little-known story of how Ricci and his brilliant student, and later colleague, Tullio Levi-Civita—two Italian academicians of widely divergent backgrounds and temperaments, came to provide the indispensable mathematical foundation—today known as the tensor calculus—for general relativity.

Abstract:
Tullio Levi-Civita è “un matematico nato”, affermava Ugo Amaldi nella commemorazione lincea del 16 dicembre 1946. La sua capacità, come quella di altri grandi scienziati, di dare contributi rilevanti alla crescita del sapere scientifico “è guidata - per riprendere ancora Ugo Amaldi - da una larga visione storica dell’evoluzione dei concetti e dei metodi” della scienza. Nell’intervento si proporranno alcune spigolature dagli scritti di Levi-Civita, mettendo in evidenza non solo la sua consapevolezza storica ed epistemologica, ma anche il fecondo incontro con grandi maestri, viventi e non, e con colleghi, collaboratori e amici di grande spessore scientifico e umano.
